The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) offers essential training in research ethics and compliance to support integrity and professionalism across academic and research institutions.

CITI Program Training at the University of Belize

The University of Belize offers access to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program, providing professional training in research ethics, compliance, and safety. This program is designed for academic staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and honorary researchers at UB. CITI certification is required for those wishing to submit research proposals to the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Purpose and Benefits of CITI Training

CITI training plays a vital role in fostering research integrity and ethical practices at UB. By participating in CITI’s online educational program, researchers at UB gain valuable knowledge in research design, ethical conduct, and professional development. These skills are essential for conducting responsible research that aligns with international standards while contributing to the development of Belize.

Access and Costs

UB’s subscription to CITI, established in May 2023, allows all affiliated researchers to access CITI courses free of charge. For those requiring training beyond the courses offered by UB, independent registration and payment are available.

Available Courses

CITI offers a wide range of courses in research ethics, compliance, and professional development. UB researchers have access to both general and specialized courses, including:

  • General Courses: Information Privacy and Security, Responsible Conduct of Research, Conflicts of Interest.
  • Specialized Courses: Animal Care and Use, Good Clinical Practice, Human Subjects Research (Biomedical and Social/Behavioral), and IRB Member Training for those involved in review board activities.

Course Recommendations

UB faculty and graduate students are encouraged to complete the general courses along with any specialized courses relevant to their field of research. This ensures they have the necessary foundation and knowledge to conduct ethical and compliant research.

Global Recognition and Relevance

Although CITI is based in the U.S., its content is internationally recognized for providing comprehensive research training and ethical guidelines. Adapted to meet the specific needs of UB’s research community, CITI offers numerous advantages, including up-to-date, globally-informed content that aligns with international standards while addressing local contexts. This ensures that UB researchers gain valuable expertise, enhance their ethical practices, and integrate their work seamlessly into the Belizean research environment.
