The University of Belize Participated in the National Forum on Fusarium TR4 Simulation Exercise
The University of Belize participated in the National Forum on Fusarium TR4 Simulation Exercise, held from June 27th to June 28th. This forum was pivotal in preparing the country for the potential outbreak of Fusarium TR4, recognized as one of the most devastating fungal diseases affecting bananas globally. The disease has been detected in Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru and it is only a matter of time until the pathogen reaches Belize.
During the forum’s second day, the university contributed by presenting insights from our cutting-edge micropropagation laboratory. This specialized facility is currently working on advancing techniques for micropropagating TR4-resistant strains of bananas. The University’s research and development efforts underscore our commitment to safeguarding Belize’s banana industry against the threat of Fusarium TR4, highlighting their proactive stance in agricultural research and innovation.
